Steve,
the Hot Hand is actually some sort of automotive gasket material (sorry, forgot the exact application. I'm automotively challenged!), not standard cork. It's a rubberized material with bits of cork embedded in it. Not sure if regular cork would do such a good job of stopping the transfer of cold from the aluminum or hold up for very long. It wouldn't help keep the reel clean if bits of cork were constantly breaking off and falling through the porting!
Maybe Karl can tell us what it's exact use was? Leon told me at the show a few weeks back but I've since forgotten. I know Skiltonian visited several automotive shops and came up empty, so I think it's rather obscure.
Best,

Try it with neoprene sometime. I like it far better than the cork gasket material. It's softer on the hands, and is overall more comfortable.
An old mousepad works great for the job.
